here’s the whole enchilada on BrainSAFE™
This is the deep dive. The boxes on the right break it into smaller bites. But if you want it all at once, read on…. This is the full skinny on BrainSAFE and why it matters so much in leadership and life.
Here’s what decades of science and behavior research tell us:
The brain is biologically wired for protection. This immediately impacts how we behave and act. Here’s what happens - so fast we often don’t even notice:
The brain receives information.
It assesses: “Is this safe or a threat?”
(And yes - even good new or different = threat to the brain.)If threat is perceived - emotional, social, physical, or even imagined - the stress response system activates.
This response overrides logic, creativity, decision-making, and connection.
What we see on the outside is the fight, flight, freeze, or fawn response.
This shows up in our behaviors, attitudes, and decisions.
Sometimes it works for us.
But often, it doesn’t.
We might:
Get angry or reactive
Miss opportunities
Stay super busy
Or eat a box of cookies when we’re trying to get fit
Why? Because…
the brain prefers to take the safe path.
And for the brain, the safe path is the one it knows or has deemed worth allocating resources to getting to know.
Each time something comes our way, the brain is analyzing, categorizing, and matching what is coming in with what it’s seen before.
So even amazing, wonderful change - is initially resisted.
That’s not a mindset issue.
That’s a predictable neurological pattern.
but people going along with unwanted changes or try new things all the time.
Here’s the nuance: We can override the brain’s signals - temporarily. Through sheer willpower, we can:
Comply
Push through
Perform
“Show up”
over time, a disconnect will reveal itself.
IF the brain isn’t in agreement with what is happening (even good stuff), it continues to signal: “Something is off. I don’t feel safe.”
This shows up in what we call TELLS:
Health issues
Relationship challenges
“Bad” habits (we call them “brilliance looking for a better job”)
Anger and blame - self, others, situations, inanimate objects (computer? car?)
Mysterious success ceilings
But it’s not a mystery.
It’s biology.
Yes, we can slap a band-aid on the problems:
We can try:
Motivation boosts
Discipline sprints
Meds to manage stress symptoms
Or just “setting new expectations”
But at the end of the day, the human brain doesn’t operate on pressure or performance. It operates on perceived safety.
And when skip this fundamental truth, we fail ourselves - and others.
So how do we make the brain feel safe?
That’s the question that created the BrainSAFE™ Approach, the foundation of the Structured Shifts™ Coaching and Leadership Model.
And the answer is: the brain needs four things. To feel:
Security, Alignment, Familiarity, Empowerment
That is the BrainSAFE™ Methodology: A science-informed methodology made actionable as a human-centered approach to helping people - and organizations - create real, lasting change by starting in the right place: With SAFEty.
And that’s the good news - because once we understand how to make the brain feel SAFE,
Change becomes possible.
Growth becomes sustainable.
And your potential becomes accessible.
Why BrainSAFE Matters
The brain is wired for protection, not progress.
When it doesn’t feel safe, it resists change—on every level.
Most strategies ignore this and try to push through.
BrainSAFE starts with the truth: safety first.
From there, everything else becomes possible.
